| Hello I'm Watsak. I'm an author-illustrator artist and a creator of 'Maihua Universe'. It is a story I created about 5 plant-human siblings who live in a tree condominium hidden in Bangkok. It is a slice-of-life genre which evolved from the creatures living with me and then moved to living with a protagonist called 'P'Ngot'. My work medium ranges from comics to comic essays, writing and animation. I also have strong passion in Japanese language which one of the key ingredients in creating my works. | |
Comic Essay: Daily Life
This piece shows one of my main medium in storytelling currently which is what I called a comic essay. It encapsulates well my unorganized mind which sees events in fragments. It is also considered an art practice in trying to come up with visuals from my head which I value this skill as a way to express 'imagination'. I also let myself go with the flow in expressing language in Thai, English or Japanese.
Comic Essay: Japanese Class
Japanese is considered a food for my thought and inspiration for my storytelling. Learning new words or meaning excites, motivates and challenges me in trying to use the language as a prompt in coming up with stories built from a sentence. That is why I still do find time to study and further my Japanese skill and this comic essay shows memorable moments in the Japanese class I enrolled.
Comic Essay: Writing Class
Apart from comic and comic essay, I also believe and do want to create stories with words. That is why in this comic journal, was when I attended a writing workshop which drew inspiration from listening to music (which I also introduced a musical-note-inspired character from my Maihua Universe) I am also in a process of building main stories for Maihua Universe on Japanese blog platform using Japanese language as a prompt coming up with stories hoping to finish the project into chapter books.
Comic Essay: Tokyo Disneyland
This piece was created as a travel log when I travelled to Tokyo Disneyland with my sister and my grandchildren. Trying to draw memories from your head can sometimes alter reality which create interesting results. It also acts like a reflection showing what I feel mostly impressed with and that could also develop into future interest, research or works as well.
Animation: Somsuay Says Thank You
This character is called 'Somsuay' which is a sidekick character of one of the main characters of Maihua Universe. I also love how animation could show more of who each character is through movements and expressions.
Maihua Comics Zine: Yingyai and Japanese
This page is from a short comic compilation gathered into a Zine format publication that I self-published, consigned to independent shops and sold at art fairs. It was a time when Maihua was still living with me according to the story timeline.
Maihua Comics Zine: Movie Night
This chapter of the comic was when I experimented moving the story from myself onto more of the fictional characters I created, in order to come up with more 'believable' stories and worldbuilding. The piece was drawn with ink on paper then scanned and colored digitally later.
Maihua Comics Zine: What Is That Smell?
I experimented using different comic layout for this piece in landscape orientation. I also used different background colors as a well of experimenting how backgrounds affect worldbuilding.
