| Asher Yeo is a freelance illustrator, tattoo artist, writer and mythology nerd based in Singapore. A lover of eyes, impossible biology and tales of metamorphosis and transformation. Ash is inspired by the stories people tell and the way these stories continue to be held in the consciousness of a people. Her book cover design for Amanda Lee Koe's Sister Snake has won the best cover award in the Singapore Book Awards. She has done work for Sentosa, Heritage Singapore and Indie music artists. |

Great Sage
A hundred different hearts hold a hundred different Sun Wukongs.There are so many stories about this beloved character in mythology, so many retellings and so many modern encounters that creating anything Wukong-related means drawing on the generations of love and art the Journey to the west has spawned.
Risograph Print, Various Sizes: In my attempt to consolidate everything people love about the story, the character and his ethos as best as I could into a single illustration. I spent time with Youtube playlists, the original texts, video game OSTs, the 1982 opening theme to finally put pen to paper and image him in my own way.
While discussing with my husband what Wukong’s best story was, he pointed out that so many people overlook his relationship with his little monkeys, his 猴子猴孙 (monkey sons and grandsons) on Flower-Fruit-Mountain.
His quest for immortality was so that he, and by extension they, didn’t have to suffer and die needlessly. This love single-handedly led him to gaining immortality at least 4 times over and going on a wild journey. They’re incredibly important to him. So I’ve penciled them in too.
