Joey has a profound ability to perceive emotions, feelings, and pain, which she deeply desires to express through her illustrations. Above all, she still holds a strong sense of childlike wonder.

Glow-in-the-dark

When the world gets too dark and growing up feels overwhelming, the gentle glow from the fish becomes my only light. It doesn’t burn like the summer sun; it just quietly guides me through the shadows of youth.

Pez

Watching the little fish swim back and forth in the tank, I feel my thoughts vanish into thin air, leaving me with nothing to think about. It happens so often now that I can't help but wonder... have they completely replaced my brain, and are they now just circling inside my head?

Natsubate 1

"Natsubate" in Japanese means "summer fatigue." We want to capture a teenage girl's coming-of-age journey. Summer, which symbolizes youth, might look peaceful and beautiful, but its intense heat can also make us feel dizzy and exhausted. We also used insects as a symbol of the obstacles of growing up. Sometimes, those problems might seem small to others, but back then, they felt like the weight of the whole world on our shoulders.

Clash of fins

I picture this girl as a fish in a tank. She is incredibly beautiful, and her home is filled with gorgeous water plants. But she is the weakest one in the school, so she always gets picked on and chased down by the others.

Pez dorado

Thinking of myself staring at the goldfish in the tank, no matter where they glide, their vibrant colors, expressive faces, and flowing tails completely mesmerizing me, keeping me from looking at anything else. It is as if they have already taken full possession of both of my eyes.

La manzana

Apples have such beautiful colors and an attractive, round shape. They’re sweet, crisp, juicy, and also really good for you. I use them to represent youth, while a cigarette is the exact opposite...

Larva

A girl once said to me, "If you could be an insect, why choose to be a butterfly? They might be beautiful, but they do nothing but sip flower nectar day in and day out. I’ve always dreamed of being a worm inside an apple. Like if you found a sweet apple that was so much larger than your entire body, wouldn’t you feel so overwhelmed with happiness that you could die?"

Thread

I only truly understood what emotional abuse felt like when it happened to me. Right then, I felt a sharp, sudden pain in my heart. It’s a pain that’s so hard to explain, isn’t it? It feels just like being sliced by a thin thread—it might not leave a deep wound, but in that exact moment, the pain is agonizing.
