| Norihiro Otsuki is a pen plotter artist based in Tokyo, where he also runs a design studio and works as an art director. Most pen plotter work is generative — code makes the image. Otsuki draws his illustrations by hand, then re-engineers every line, one by one, for the plotter. He believes a picture is, at its origin, an original made to be sold. Japanese ukiyo-e and woodblock prints worked the same way: the artist's drawing was redesigned for the woodblocks and printed — each sheet was real ink on real paper. That is why he chose the pen plotter — not to make pictures that are scrolled past on a phone or mass-printed by inkjet, but pictures that physically exist and are meant to be sold. He wants people to feel the joy of owning a picture again. No generative AI is used at any stage. |
