| Lila is an illustrator based in Indonesia. She enjoys reading, watching films and strolling around the alleys of random neighborhoods, watching the tiny details of the houses she passes by. Lila is deeply fascinated by the cultural stories embedded in Southeast Asia’s architectures. She believes that every building carries traces of history, identity, and the people who have lived around it. | |
Daydream City
In the city where I live, an old train called Sepur Kluthuk Jaladara will occasionally run right through the city’s main street. Sadly, I’ve never been lucky enough to catch it passing by in person. So for now, I can only imagine the moment, and capture it in on my way through this artwork.
MBTI Houses
My very personal interpretation of how houses would look like based on the MBTI type. I know it’s probably a pseudo science, but I enjoyed the process of doing research, people reading, and collecting pieces of my imagination to build every one of it.
Thonburi Along The Way
It’s my personal connection to the buildings I passed by in Thonburi. During my time in Bangkok, I love to take casual walks around the neighborhood, and those store houses were making their magic way to connect with me. I love observing the little details of their facades, the feeling of drawing them, and imagining the lives of the people who call these places home.
The Speaking Alley
For every travel, wandering through unknown alleys will always be on my itinerary. They’re quiet but the details speak to me. This artwork itself is a combination of the alleys I walk through in different cities in Indonesia, and also some part of Bangkok. One thing that connects them is the “The Tangled Electrical Wires.”
Ipoh Tailor Shop
I was drawn to all its aging details of this old tailor shop in Ipoh, Malaysia. The weathered woods, the facade that looks like pieces of reused ones, and the climbing plants that may have been growing there for decades. There is something unexplainable about these traces of time that makes ordinary building feel alive.
The Neighborhood Shops
Inspired by storefront facades in Hanoi, this work reflects on the visual similarities found in everyday urban architecture across Southeast Asia. The narrow facades, stacked structures, and the colorful-rustic walls feel surprisingly familiar, echoing the shops and buildings commonly seen in Indonesia.
The Sherlock Holmes Museum
I grew up reading Sherlock Holmes stories and always dreamed of visiting the museum one day. Since that dream has yet to come true, I decided to capture it first through my painting.I truly enjoyed every part of the process; moving my brush to paint the bricks one by one, adding the tiny details of the climbing plants, and painting the door while imagining that, someday, I might finally be there to open it myself.
A Quiet Day in Chinatown
A quiet day in Chinatown, tucked away in one of its narrow alleys. Somehow, these areas feel familiar to me, even though I walk in different cities. Chinatown always share a similar atmosphere, similar feelings, and similar route, with a small Chinese temple often sitting at the heart of the street, quietly becoming its center.
