Prayoon Chanyawongse (1915 - 1992) Born in Bangkok, Prayoon was a self-taught cartoonist who entered the Thai literary world at just 19. Throughout his 58-year career, he produced tens of thousands of works across a wide range of categories. His early success came with serialized likay (a traditional Thai performance) cartoons for newspapers and illustrations for magazine columns. Later, he made a name for himself as a political satire cartoonist, a field in which he earned two international awards. One of his most iconic creations was the character "Mr. Sooklek," who gained fame in newspapers. Sooklek appeared in both serialized folk-tale comics and political and social satire cartoons. Through Sooklek, Prayoon voiced the concerns of ordinary people and spoke truth to power. Prayoon himself led a simple, sustainable life in harmony with nature. His experiences shaped his popular cartoon series Kabuan Kan Kae Jon (The Anti-Poverty Movement), which ran in the Thai Rath newspaper for over 20 years, sharing the wisdom of common folk and offering inspiration to readers. |
