Holla! I'm Glendford Lumbao, a freelance illustrator and muralist from Manila, Philippines.

Distinguished by dynamic shapes and angles, together with playful textures and colors, my illustration aims to create a sense of motion. Surrounded by the vast expanse of the world and all that is in it, I am forever fascinated by nature, history, and folklore. They are the inspiration for my art, which has thankfully landed me exciting collaborations with local and international brands involving advertising and branding, interiors and architecture, literature, and film.

Banawor Bakasyonitas

Inspired by my numerous hiking trips and outreach missions in the mountainous regions of Luzon, Philippines. This illustration shows a group of hikers traversing the rice teracces of Banawor (present-day Banaue)

Ride Safe

This is the frist layout of a mural I designed and painted last year. The mural project is part of Allianz PNB Life's Ride Safe, a continuous effort to further promote our mutual advocacy of active transport, inclusive mobility, and sustainability in the Philippines. This illustration depicts an environment where cyclists & pedestrians can move safely and enjoy the outdoors. It aims to give people a glimpse of what could happen if policymakers veer away from car-centric urbanism.

Midnight Surfer #2

Illustration of a surfer walking on the beach, ready to catch waves in the dark of night. 1/3 of the Midnight Surfers - an illustration series I made that draws inspiration from one of my beach trips earlier this year, where it was raining heavily, the sky was dark, yet surfers continued to ride the waves.

Duyan ka ng Magiting

A visualization of the song lyric "duyan ka ng magiting" (cradle of noble heroes) from the Philippines' national anthem. The illustration shows three characters: Aponibolinayen, Sarangay, and a T'boli dreamweaver, representing the three major island groups of the Philippines.

Fetching water at Panna Meena Ka Kund

Illustration of a woman fetching water at a sixteenth-century stepwell in Amer Fort (sub-city of Jaipur). As half of Rajasthan state is on dry desert soil, Panna Meena was built so the people of Amer could collect water during the dry season.

Baguio Roundtrip

An illustration showcasing a group of cross-country travelers with their bicycles.

Eskayan Enigma

For this year's #36DaysOfType, I created a series of letterforms visualizing the glyphs of the enigmatic Eskayan script—a writing system used by an indigenous group in Bohol, Philippines called the Eskaya. The character design aims to represent the enigmatic essence of the script. Each letterform portrays contorted body postures, with a specific emphasis on the hands and feet, as they were the original inspiration of the Eskayan letters.

The Eskayan language was believed to have been created by a wise ancestor named Pinay, who lived before the Spanish colonization of Bohol in the late 1500s. He wrote the language/script on wooden tablets and hid them in a cave according to some oral traditions. These tablets were rediscovered in the 20th century by rebel leader Mariano Datahan, who decoded Pinay's words and shared the language and script with his followers.

In a different version, Mariano Datahan was the person who stored Eskaya records in a cave after receiving vision/linguistic inspiration directly from Pinay. The Eskaya people primarily use the Eskayan script for ceremonial purposes, such as recording genealogies, religious texts, and cultural traditions. It's worth noting that the Eskayan script is relatively obscure and not widely known or recognized outside of the Eskaya community.

Sagarmatha

Illustration showcasing the mysterious strengths of a sherpa.

Looking for Bernado Carpio

In Philippine folklore, there is a story about a giant named Bernardo Carpio who is believed to be trapped underground between two mountains. This illustration depicts the first expedition to Monte Alba (presently known as Montalban), in which four 'enkantos' (mythical environmental spirits) attempt to find the said giant.

Hanuman in Jodhpur

A stylized illustration of Hanuman, the beloved monkey deity of India. I was inspired to draw this character after reading a children's storybook about Ramayana that I found at Mehragarh Museum during my India trip last year.
